Gambling age

The gambling age in Las Vegas is 21.

Nevada law sets 21 as the minimum age to play, to collect winnings and even to hang around where casino games are running. Here is what that means on a Las Vegas trip.

THE SHORT ANSWER

21

You must be at least 21 to gamble anywhere in Nevada, including the Las Vegas Strip, Downtown, Reno and Laughlin. The rule covers casino table games, slot machines, sports betting, race books and pari-mutuel wagering. It comes from state law, NRS 463.350, so it does not change from one casino to the next.

What the law says a person under 21 cannot do

The statute lists three things. A person under 21 may not:

  1. Play or collect.Play, be allowed to play, place wagers at or collect winnings from any gambling game, slot machine, race book, sports pool or pari-mutuel operator, whether personally or through an agent.
  2. Loiter where games run.Loiter, or be permitted to loiter, in or about any room or premises where licensed games, race books, sports pools or pari-mutuel wagering are operated.
  3. Work the casino floor.Be employed as a gaming employee, except in a counting room. A narrow exception covers adults who build or maintain gaming devices for manufacturers and distributors.

“Through an agent” closes the obvious loophole

An adult cannot play a slot machine on behalf of someone under 21, place their sports bet or cash a ticket for them. The law prohibits playing and collecting winnings “through an agent,” not just in person. If you travel with someone under 21, keep their money out of every wager.

What happens if someone under 21 wins

Collecting winnings is part of the prohibition, so a person under 21 is not allowed to collect from a game, machine or sportsbook in Nevada. Treat any bet placed by someone underage as a bet that cannot be paid to them.

Why you will be asked for ID

Breaking the rule is a misdemeanor, both for the person under 21 and for any licensee, employee or dealer who allows it. The statute also says it is no excuse for the casino to claim it believed the person was 21. Carry a valid photo ID, even if you look older.

Walking through a casino with a younger traveler

Many Las Vegas restaurants, shows and hotel elevators sit beyond a casino floor. The law targets loitering where games run, so keep moving with your group and do not wait at a table, a machine or a sportsbook counter. Some properties go further: Circa in Downtown Las Vegas describes its whole resort as 21+. See our Circa visitor guide.

Pool parties and nightclubs

Nevada’s gaming regulations define a “club venue” as a venue at a casino resort that charges admission, serves alcohol, allows dancing, offers live music or a DJ, and prohibits patrons under 21 (Regulation 5.300). Dayclubs and nightclubs that fit that definition are adults-only. Check each venue’s own entry rules before you buy a ticket.

Outside Nevada, check the state. Gambling ages are set state by state and sometimes by tribal agreements, so a casino in another state can have a different minimum. Use our state guides and confirm with that state’s regulator before you go.
